Last week, Charlottesville Vice Mayor Wes Bellamy was put on administrative leave after a series of controversial tweets emerged online. Various posts on Mr. Bellamy’s twitter account between 20contained highly vulgar content, conveying anti-gay and misogynistic messages. News outlets report Wes Bellamy, who is black, announced in a statement Monday that he has decided to resign from his post at Albemarle High School.

Bellamy was placed on administrative leave after the tweets surfaced last month. Some officials described them as racist, sexist and homophobic. A Virginia Board of Education member has stepped down after a series of his tweets from several years ago surfaced, including public messages that had gay slurs, references to sexual assault. Bellamy’s past tweets in-cluded gay slurs, profanity de-scribing women’s genitalia, anti-white language and de-scriptions of sexual assault.
